Coilover Legality Vicroads explanation and Pedders interpretation.

Coilover Legality Vicroads explanation and Pedders interpretation.

Coil over Shock Legality.

There have been numerous questions over the years regarding legality of Pedders coil over kits.

Recently Vicroads made the move to explain more clearly what they regard as a “Coilover Kit”.

If you read below they explain in their guidelines what they regard as a coilover shock or kit requirements.

I have taken excerpts from the Vicroads guidelines and an explanation below them to help explain these guidelines and also attached the relevant section of the Vicroads guidlines

The Pedders suspension coilover kits  have not been altered from the  original layout.

The Pedders Coilover kits will still be a Mcpherson /Chapman strut layout and thefore still the same type of suspension as described in Vicroads and do not require a VASS certificate

This type of modification is not done on any Pedders kits.

If the original equipment came out as a combined Shock/Coil arrangement as described by Vicroads then the Pedders kits stay the same as per the original design.

If the vehicle has from factory a separate coil and shock arrangement, then the Pedders Coilover kits will keep the original layout as a separate coil and shock.

EG.

What the article is trying to explain is that if you take a leaf sprung rear suspension vehicle and fit a 4 link then you have changed the original layout of the vehicle and will require a VASS certificate.

There are some Roadworthy stations that will always interpret the guidelines differently.

With these people you can only explain our interpretation and hopefully get them to agree.
